This turnip was improved & reintroduced by breeder Frank Morton. Every part of this turnip is beautiful & tasty, revolutionizing what a turnip might be. The leafy tops are pink-ribbed & tender, the roots are bright magenta on the outside & white with pink streaks on the inside. When we first grew these turnips, we sliced them thinly & ate them raw. After hearing they are categorized as a pickling turnip, we tried that too, with excellent results. They are also delicious in a classic Japanese dishroots seasoned & braised with the tops chopped & mixed in. Best grown in spring or in late summer for fall harvest. Stores well. Direct sow outdoors in early spring, 2-3 weeks before last frost, & anytime after (until mid-late summer). Space seeds about an inch apart in rows 12 inches apart. Thin sprouts to 2 inches apart & then, once they reach 3-4 inches tall, thin to 4-6 inches apart. Keep soil moist & cover with light-weight row cover to protect from flea beetle damage. Turnips prefer rich, fertile, well-drained soil & plenty of water. Harvest when roots are young, about 3-4 inches in diameter. Eat immediately, or cut the leaves off & store the roots.
