Thelocactus bicolor ssp. schwarzii Skill level: Germination: beginner Growing: beginner T. bicolor ssp. schwarzii is a Mexican species with showy, magenta flowers which have red throats & white midsections. It is fairly easy to grow if a porous, mostly mineral soil mix is used. Grow in a pot with good drainage. Water regularly from spring to autumn only after soil has dried. Feed with a quarter-strength, high potassium fertilizer in summer. It requires full sun or light shade & careful watering to keep plant compact with strongly coloured spines. It is reportedly cold-hardy to 25oF for short periods if soil is kept dry. Germination of cactus seeds is about timing, temperature, quality of seeds, cleanliness, & establishing a technique for sowing. Some species have a higher germination rate, and/or a lower germination time than others. For that reason a specific success rate can’t be guaranteed.
