She was one of the best known Enlish botanical illustrators of the Victorian age. Due to poor health in childhood she was encouraged to occupy herself by drawing. She was introduced to botany by Dr. Dods, a family friend & developed a career as an illustrator when she moved to London. She wrote more than 20 books which she illustrated with chromolithographs. Her works were written in the popular style but were said to be very accurate. She was responsible for the popularising of Botany but never achieved critical acclaim due to the fact that she was self taught.
