These Mystic Topaz pendants are available in either oval or emerald cut & are set in sterling silver. Each pendant comes on an 18 sterling silver chain. The oval cut stones are predominately blue with a green flash. The emerald cut are predominately purple with a green flash. Mystic topaz is a relatively new variety of topaz gemstone having first appeared in the late 1990’s. Mystic topaz is white (clear) topaz that has been synthetically treated using vapor (or vacuum) deposition to produce the colorful rainbow effect it has. This chemical process involves bonding an extremely thin layer of metallic film over the top of the stone so that the interesting color effects are reflected from the crown. Mystic topaz has been called many other names including Fire Topaz, Mystic Fire Topaz, Rainbow Topaz, Caribbean Topaz, Alaska Topaz, & Alaskan Ice. Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminum & fluorine (AlSiO) with an orthorhombic crystal structure. It is transparent or translucent & has a rating of 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. Topaz has perfect cleavage & a vitreous luster. Topaz is mined all over the world including Japan, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Pakistan, & several locations within the United States, however, Brazil is the largest producer of topaz. Caring for Mystic Topaz: Do not use abrasive materials when cleaning mystic topaz as the scratches could damage the coating created during the vapor deposition process.
