A late 18th-early 19th century Japanese 5 compartment inro. This rare attractive traditional personal accessory was used to hold medicines & herbs & this 3-5/8 x 1-3/4 lacquer example is 1-1/8 thick. It has a matte finish, gold highlights & deep reddish brown colouration. It is in fair condition with some minor issues: some minor chipping & losses to the top & bottom of the channels that held the mounting cord, & the loss of the toggle or bead & the cord.
