Kala Namak (Himalayan Black Salt) is by far one of the most unique types of salt we’ve ever come across. It’s made from halite (rock salt) mined in the Himalayas salt ranges of India & Pakistan, which is then packed with herbs & charcoal into a roaring kiln. Its colour isn’t truly black, but an interesting shade of brownish-pink, again due to naturally occurring trace minerals in the salt plus the kiln-firing process used to bring out Kala Namak’s characteristic flavour. That flavour? Egg. Specifically the sulphurous profile familiar to fans of hard boiled eggs. Vegetarian friends rejoice! If you are looking to mimic a bit of egg flavour without the use of animal products this is for you. Think of it in potato salad, on avocado toast, in sandwiches, wraps & for depth in sauces & stew. This stuff is an experience. One whiff of this incredibly pungent salt should tell you that a little goes a VERY long way. Use this sparingly - you’ve been warned! Add tiny amounts & taste frequently until you’ve created your masterpiece. We considering mastering the use of this amazing seasoning part of our culinary bucket list & we hope you do too! Kala Namak offers two things: colour & flavour. This fine grain version dissolves quite quickly in contact with moisture so it doesn’t necessarily provide a textural crunch common with flaked sea salts.
