Echinops ritro is found across Eastern & Southern Europe & Western Asia. Echinops spinosissimus is found across Southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean, east to Iran, originally collected in Northwestern Crete, Greece. Great for pollinators Drought tolerant. It is a great plant for adding to Mediterranean or prairie type plantings, cottage gardens, borders, rockeries etc. They do well in drier well drained sites in full sun, but are quite tolerant of other soil types & moisture. Drought Tolerant. Echinops spinosissimus is best at the front or middle of the border whereas Echinops ritro is taller & better at the middle to back of the border. Echinops ritro is a robust, bushy upright, herbaceous perennial thistle, growing to 1m (39’’) tall, with broad, jaggedy-divided, prickly dark green leaves whitish beneath, bearing globes of violet - steel-blue flowers 3.5cm - 6cm in diameter on silvery, branched, leafed stems in late summer. The flowers are loved by pollinators of all kinds & the seeds are avidly consumed by birds in Autumn. Echinops spinosissimus is a branching perennial herb up to 80cm (31’’) tall. Leaves are divided into narrow triangular lobes, each with a slender but hard spine at the tip. The plant produces nearly spherical flower heads 3.5cm - 6cm in diameter in summer, containing many white or pale lavender disc florets but no ray florets. The flowers are loved by pollinators of all kinds & the seeds are avidly consumed by birds in Autumn.
