Carex buchananii & comans hail from New Zealand & Carex pendula (collected in Lincolnshire & Lancashire, UK) is a UK native found across Eurasia, Northwest Africa & the Middle East. Carex buchananii & comans are great plants for adding colour & structure to pots, planters, scree gardens, prairie type plantings, cottage gardens, rockeries etc. They do well on various soil types & moisture levels, preferring well drained sites in full sun to semi-shade. They can be situated at the front or middle of the border, with Carex comans forms growing to around 50cm high & across & Carex buchananii growing to 75cm high & across. They are clump forming evergreen grasses, producing a lovely mop head of very slender, shimmering silvery green leaves in Carex comans & C. comans ‘Frosted Curls’ (Photo 1, 2, 3, 4) & chocolate brown in C. comans ‘Hot Chocolate’. Carex buchananii (Photo 5, 6, 7) is more upright in character with narrow, evergreen, orange-brown, arching leaves with curling tips, & brown flowering spikes in late summer. The flowers on both species are somewhat insignificant & are often concealed amongst the flowing locks! Carex pendula (Photo 8, 9, 10) is found growing in various dry to damp semi - shaded hedgerows, stream sides & woodlands as well as freshwater wetland habitats. It can often be found growing in damp or flooded woodland areas at water depths no greater than 30cm. It is a great structural plant for adding to sunny, semi-shaded to fully shaded spots & is a fine woodland, bog or marginal plant, suitable for large natural ponds, streams, rivers & lakes, giving year round interest & can be used for waste water tratment & phytoremediation. Great for planting among ferns, Hostas etc. It is quite a vigorous plant & does well on various pH/soil types. It is evergreen, growing to ~1.8m high (though often smaller) & forms a thick tuft of dark green, simple, linear, pleated, alternate leaves, 30 - 40cm long. Bright Yellow Flowers occur on long pendulous catkin-like spikes in May - June, followed by green brown fruits. A great plant for wildlife & increasing biodiversity, with roots providing hiding places & egg laying sites for aquatic organisms & stems provide a climbing site for emerging larvae & a hiding place for birds & mammals.
