ANTIQUE VETERINARY BOTTLE - R.H. Penhale, Holsworthy, Devon An antique veterinary bottle, with its original label, contents & stopper. The bottle is clear glass & tablespoon measurements on the back. The label is for R. H. Penhale, MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon, Holsworthy. It looks like it contains ‘Astringent Bismuth’ possibly an antidiarrheal for dogs. I believe the hand written instructions read ‘Mixture for dog. Two teaspoonful to be given 3 times daily’. Mitzi appears to be the name of the dog! Amazingly the company of vets is still in existence, now called Penbode Vets. Richard Penhale was a Captain in the army during WW1 & looked after thousands of horses on the Mesopotamian front & earned a Military Order of the British Empire. More info here: https://www.penbodevets.co.uk/about-us The white (when mixed) contents is still mostly liquid. The original cork is firmly in the top. The bottle has a moulded lip, suggesting it was made after the 1910’s. The number 4 is embossed on the base. The last photo shows other chemist & vet bottles I currently have for sale. Age: circa 1920’s Condition: Original patina, marks, foxing to paper label, & a tear to the label. It is NOT recommended to open this bottle, due to potentially dangerous substances inside.
