Peanuts are a pale pink colour & also known as pale skin peanuts. People are often surprised to find out that peanuts are not nuts at all. Actually, they are the seeds of a leguminous plant related to peas & beans. The peanut plant is unique because its flowers grow above ground, yet the pods containing the seeds develop in the soil. Peanuts need well draining soil that is free of rocks & other debris & does poorly in clay soil. Height of 2 to 4 feet tall. Sow on top of soil in mounds of 4 peanuts & cover with 1 to 1.5 inches of moist potting soil. Peanuts will germinate in 5 to 10 days. 25 to 40 days after sowing, yellow flowers form. Upon flower pollination, plants send pegs down into the soil. The peanuts grow on these pegs underground after the flowers fade. Transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Harvest in 110 to 130 days when the plant yellows, prior to Autumn frosts. Dig/pull out entire plant with hand trowel or spading fork, carefully shaking off most of the soil. Hang plants to dry indoors for about 30 day. The nuts can be enjoyed raw or roasted to perfection by baking shelled or unshelled in a 180C oven for 15 to 20 minutes. 15 Pink Skin Peanut Seeds - Cooking, Butter, Raw & Roasted
